Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection Services

Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a highly valuable technique that allows a qualified inspector to evaluate a part without causing damage to that component.  Fluorescent Penetrant inspection services, also known as fluorescent liquid penetrant inspection or FPI, is a method of inspecting materials for cracks or indications after the heat treating process.  The only NDT method that Solar Atmospheres of Western PA performs is FPI.

Fluorescent penetrant inspection services are widely applied and are a low-cost inspection method used to locate surface-breaking defects in metals.  Fluorescent penetrant inspection services are also used to detect casting and forging defects, weld integrity, cold working defects and fatigue cracks on in-service components.  The, Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection Services, or FPI process is based upon capillary action, where low tension dye penetrates into clean and dry surface breaking discontinuities.  Once this occurs, the inspection is then performed under ultraviolet light, where the developed dyes emit a brilliant yellow-green light that contrasts strongly against the dark background.

Solar Atmospheres of Western PA is capable of inspecting product that is up to 40 feet in length.   This crane accessible operation is run by several in-house Level 2 inspectors (IAW NAS410 Rev.3) and includes a 36’x3’ wash tank with a 10’x12’ inspection booth.
