Diffusion Bonding Services

Diffusion Bonding Services

Diffusion bonding services are joining processes that involves atomic movement between metal parts that are intimate contact, forming a strong metallurgical bond. Diffusion bonding services occur at high temperature (but below the melting point). The diffusion bonding process is particularly facilitated in a vacuum because of the elimination of oxygen, allowing for a high integrity bond. There are two basic diffusion mechanisms, vacancy diffusion and interstitial diffusion.

Solar Atmospheres has a long and successful history of working closely with our customers to develop new technologies, and improve current methodologies. We continue to develop applications in the area of metal to metal bonding services with our customers in the medical, aerospace and other industries. Diffusion bonding services can be as simple as bonding the cross-over points of the wires in fabricated metal screens, or as exotic as bonding rare earth metals to copper heat sinks for use as cyclotron targets to produce new types of  radioactive isotopes .

The five key parameters required for effective diffusion bonding services are:

  1. Cleanliness of the parts
  2. An inert or oxygen-free atmosphere
  3. The force holding the components in contact with each other
  4. Temperature
  5. Time at temperature

The Solar Advantage:

  • A complete line of high vacuum high temperature furnaces from small R&D to large 12 foot.
  • Precise temperature control
  • vacuum heating provides an oxygen free atmosphere and can degas the parts prior to the bonding temperature is reached
  • Access to a R&D technology team of scientist and metallurgists to help with set up design and process cycle development
