Overview

In 2000, Solar Atmospheres Inc strategically decided to start a new facility west of the Allegheny Mountains in Western Pennsylvania.  This expansion was due primarily to service titanium industries whose epicenter is located northeast Ohio and Western PA.  Securing several long term agreements enabled Solar Atmospheres to invest and build Solar Atmospheres of Western PA. 

Location

Located in Hermitage, Pennsylvania (60 miles north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Solar Atmospheres of Western PA is primarily known for its furnace technology and large vacuum thermal processing.  Approximately 65,000 square feet of physical plant space is required to accommodate over twelve vacuum furnaces utilized for commercial heat treating and brazing.  

Features and Capabilities

The largest vacuum furnace in the world is located at this state-of-art facility, which is 36 feet long.  This particular furnace hot zone is 60” wide x 60” high x 432” long and is capable of handling over 150,000 pounds at any one time.  There are four more large vacuum furnaces located here.  The sizes for three of them are 60”x60”x288” long and one is 60”x60”x144” long.  All of these furnaces are capable of processing loads up to 60,000 pounds each. 

Other, smaller vacuum furnaces help round out the line up.  Many of the smaller vacuum furnaces include 10 bar high pressure gas quenching coupled with redesigned blower fans to enhance increased cooling rates.  The smaller furnaces are also equipped to perform a case hardening process known as Low Pressure Vacuum Carburizing (LPVC).  These furnaces provide customers with the processing of materials, such as nickel alloys, titanium, 300 and 400 series stainless, tool steels and many more. Industries and Services

Serving over 18 industries, including aerospace, defense, electronics, nuclear and power gen, Solar’s experience is unmatched for vacuum heat treating and brazing services.  In addition, the facility is equipped to perform a value added nondestructive testing process after heat treating.  This fluorescent liquid penetrant (FLP) inspection line is over 200 feet in length and NADCAP approved.
